Vicky and Wayne

Hi, my name is Vicky, my husband and I own and operate Newton Street Childcare. We have four beautiful children Michael, Sara, Steven and Patrick and three gorgeous grandchildren.

I am a qualified teacher with a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) and work alongside my staff. We have collaboratively constructed a clear vision, which recognises children as the heart of all we do. I am on a continuous learning journey working beside the tamariki, families and Kaiako. I am inspired daily by their dedication, commitment, presence, and love of learning.

Our vision is designed to allow children to lead their own learning, to be curious and have a passion for learning. We have high expectation for our tamariki encouraging them to excel through enabling them to grow strong identities, languages, and culture.

Teacher: Laura

Hey I’m Laura,
I grew up in Katikati but now live at the Mount. I have been working here at Newton Street since March 2016 after returning from two years of travel. Though I got to see lots of the U.K, Europe and beyond I still have itchy feet and am definitely not done exploring yet. I love living at the Mount, spending time with friends and family, making the most of the beach and getting outdoors to explore more of our beautiful country.

Teaching is definitely my passion. I completed a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) through Bethlehem Tertiary Institute back in 2010 and have been happily teaching ever since. I have worked with children of each age group and though I love the uniqueness of each age I do have a soft spot for the two and three year olds.

My personal teaching philosophy is greatly inspired by the Reggio philosophy. This includes a great respect for the child which acknowledges many creative ways of being and doing, and a focus on an intriguing, inspiring and aesthetically pleasing environment. I also have a passion for outdoor learning, risk taking, natural resources and real life experiences.

Teacher: Juliet Cantwell

Hi my name is Juliet Cantwell.
I gained my Bachelor of Teaching Degree in Early Childhood Education with the University of Auckland. I am a fully register teacher. I love the work I do and look forward each day to teaching and learning alongside the children at Newton Street.

Barry, my husband and I enjoy the Tauranga region for living and working and am fortunate to be enjoying watching and being involved with our grandchildren who live close by.

Hello everyone, my name is Jelaine Hodge, mother of two teenagers and a qualified Early Childhood teacher. I have been married and a home owner in Papamoa for 17years and have been working with young children for over ten years.

I believe that a quality education comes from a holistic approach to actively promoting healthy, collaborative and respectful relationships with my colleagues, the child and their whānau, based on the best interests and individual strengths of the child; and providing the child with a challenging, thought provoking, fun and safe learning environment.

Teacher: Wendy

Hi I’m Wendy
Originally from England I immigrated to New Zealand 16 years ago. I have worked in the care sector for over 20 years in various paid and voluntary positions. I have 12 years experience in New Zealand home-based care as well as raising my own children. I believe learning/education starts at birth and at home within our families and then in partnership with the school and community. All children need to feel loved, respected and be listened to in a nurturing, positive, fun and safe environment, somewhere they are able to explore and learn at a pace that they are comfortable with, yet where they are encouraged to extend themselves and try new things.

I want our children to go off into the world as confident learners.

Be confident, Be strong – Kia Kia Maia Kaha

Teacher: Jaimie

I’m Jaimie, I have lived in Papamoa for 15 years. I have one child and have the privilege of bringing him to work with me every day.

I have a Bachelor of Teaching Degree (Early Childhood Education) and am fully qualified. I have been teaching ECE for 13 years. I am passionate about providing a natural environment and using the environment as the 3rd teacher (so ensuring it is set up in a way that it is inviting, exciting and allows the children to get involved).

The highlight of my job is watching the joy and excitement on the children’s faces as they learn about the world around them.

Teacher: Helen

Hello.

My name is Helen Cantwell. I am from Katikati but moved to Tauranga once I finished school. Previously a senior hairdresser, I decided to make the change to early childhood after I became a mother to two beautiful children, Konnor and Maddison, which attend Newton Street also. I am just beginning my full time study with New Zealand Tertiary College. I feel lucky to be able to work with such a great team and see our beautiful tamariki grow.

Teacher: Erin

Hi my name is Erin, I was born and raised here in Tauranga. I grew up in Te Puna by the beach so I have a love of children getting messy and exploring the great outdoors. Before I became an Early Childhood Teacher I was a nanny for eighteen months for two beautiful children. I then started my Early Childhood journey at OPEYS Education and Care Centre, where I stayed for five years. I love the team here at Newton Street and have enjoyed extending my teaching knowledge and practice.
